Abstract
Antibacterial action of trimethoprim alone and in combination with sulfamethoxazole on various pathogenic bacteria has been studied widely and its synergistic action of these drugs has been recognized.
For the evaluation of the action of these drugs against S. typhi authors have conducted an antibacterial assay of drugs with 90 strains isolated in this area.
Antibacterial effect was augmented prominantly when applied in combination as compared with single action, especially this was apparent with high sulfamethoxazole resistant strains, so all the isolated strains were distributed within the highly sensitive range regardless of several resistant strains against single drug.
Criteria for reading of results seems to be an important factor, as the unit of minimum inhibitory concentration is significantly differ from that of growth inhibitory concentration and also the composition of media affect the result of drug action i.e. sulfamethoxazole affected more by nutrient agar or by tryticase soy agar than trimethoprim.
